Daenerys Targaryen
Game of Thrones
Qarth
THIS COSTUME HAS BEEN RETIRED. When I saw that Maisie Williams was going to be at Tampa Bay Comic Con, I knew I had to go. When I saw that Jason Momoa was going to Tampa Bay Comic Con and there were going to be TWO panels, I thought it would be amazing if I could cosplay the always amazing Daenerys Targaryean as part of this Game of Thrones filled weekend. My friend, Aubree, had made Dany's Qarth dress and was wonderful enough to lend it to me (all the way from Canada) for the weekend.
This lovely dress is fully lined, sea-sponge painted with metallic gold, and has flexible plastic shoulders and belt that were made with (ready?) hot glue. I purchased additional wefts for the wig and sewed them in just days before Tampa Bay Comic Con because I was paranoid that my naturally darker hair would show through. It was my first experience sewing wefts, and it is one of the most frustrating things I've ever done. The wig was sent back to Aubree with new hair AND tears in it :P
My Tampa Bay Comic Con experience was an interesting one. A lot of people thought I was from Lord of the Rings, actually. I also discovered how many people don't actually know Dany's name. They think her name is Khaleesi. -.- I met some other super sweet Game of Thrones cosplayers, but also experienced some people being completely rude and/or elitist. It was sad, but I enjoyed being Dany. I felt kind of bad because in line for my photo-ops James and I were playing Zombie Dice on his phone to pass the time. People were asking for my picture and they had to ask 3 times before I realized they were talking to me -.-
I was determined to get a great picture with Jason Momoa while I was dressed as his wife, so when my turn came I started asking to take a picture kissing him on the cheek. Jason was so easy going that he seemed almost dopey. He said "Ok." and bent down to my level (and he is MUCH taller than I am.) I gave him a kiss on the beardy cheek, and was sent on my way after excitedly thanking him.
